Fayette campus hosts STEAM program for female high schoolers

In a serendipitous, but unplanned, coincidence, Future4U: An Exploration of STEAM Career Opportunities for Women took place at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus March 8, which also just happened to be the International Day of Women.

Fayette campus, local leaders forming a plan to fight addiction

The Outreach and Continuing Education department at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus brought together a group of local educators, business people, government officials, parents, and activists Feb. 2 for a roundtable discussion on opioid abuse. The meeting morphed into a planning session, with eager participants ready to get to work on fixing the problem through education.

Students gather on Fayette campus for Day of Service

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus hosted 75 students from the University’s western campuses on Jan. 16 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, an annual opportunity to perform acts to benefit communities. Besides Fayette, Beaver, Behrend, DuBois, Greater Allegheny and New Kensington also participated.

Nursing alumna Carolyn Garver recognized by employer, alma mater

Carolyn Castor Garver, a 1986 graduate of Penn State’s bachelor of science degree program in nursing, received her employer's annual Patient Safety Award twice in the past five years. In September, the College of Nursing Alumni Society recognized her as someone who exemplifies the spirit of nursing and a commitment to the college's ideals and philosophy.

Kary Coleman, director of development and alumni relations at Penn State New Kensington, will be honored Aug. 25 as one of Pittsburgh’s 50 Finest in 2016 by Pittsburgh’s WHIRL Magazine and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) of Western Pennsylvania at the annual CFF gala in Pittsburgh.

College of Nursing receives grant for rural nurse practitioner education

Penn State's College of Nursing was awarded $350,000 from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration for the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship program, which aims to increase the number of advanced practice nurses working as primary care providers in underserved areas.

From well pad to Washington

Army veteran Daniel Sparks was living the good life during the nation’s oil and gas boom but found himself laid off last November, with no prospects for work. The father of three felt that his leadership experience from the military would appeal to some employers, but he knew that his job prospects were diminished without a college degree. Less than a year later, Sparks has blossomed into a full-fledged college student who is active at Penn State's Fayette campus, in particular with the Student Veterans Association.
